Botanical Name: Oryza sativa L (aka Black, Purple, Forbidden, or Emperor's rice)
Origin: China
Black rice is a dark colored, short-grain rice that turns into a deep purple color once cooked. Also known as "forbidden rice", it is considered the healthiest variety of any rice on the market, containing anthocyanins which account for its dark color and high antioxidant levels as well as essential amino acids like lysine and tryptophan; vitamins such as thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), folic acid (B9); and dietary minerals including iron, zinc, calcium, manganese, and phosphorus.
Qualities: similar to brown rice, black rice is full of antioxidant-rich bran, which is found in the outer layer of the kernel but only black-rice bran contains the antioxidants known as anthocyanins, purple pigments which are higher by weight than that of other colored grains and have been linked to a decreased risk of heart disease and cancer, improvements in memory, and other health benefits.
Common use: black rice's deep black color turns deep purple when cooked and has a mild, nutty taste.
Storage: keeps well in a sealed container in a cool, dry, and dark location

Black rice has An immensely rich nutty flavor, and is extremely high in antioxidants. Love this rice!! It’s pretty much the only rice I eat these days. I highly recommend anybody who hasn’t eaten it before to give it a go. You won’t regret it!

You have to pick 1 star but they deserve ZERO. I ordered 25 lbs of their “ancient” black rice because it is suppose to be raw. When I received it would not bloom at all, which either means it is heat treated or it’s so old it can’t. I contacted the company to return the product as it’s useless to me and they refused. They said they don’t guarantee germination or freshness - which it absolutely doesn’t say in the product information. They are refusing to take it back and refusing a refund. Not to mention they only seem to have one snarky “customer service” person named Alannah who I would fire immediately if I owned this business. DO NOT BUY FROM HERE unless you like poor quality to go with their discount prices.

Love the taste and health benefits associated with the product. Ended up mixing it half and half with India Basmati rice and pressure cooking it for about 9 minutes. A little butter and it was good to go. Thanks.
