Origin: China
Derived from: corn
Qualities: Xylitol is a carbohydrate found in hardwood trees, several kinds of fruit, as well as corn. It has a chemical structure that looks like a cross between a sugar and an alcohol but it is neither. It's nearly as sweet as sugar (sucrose) but has fewer calories.
- same sweetness as sugar
- 40% fewer calories than sugar
- 75% fewer carbs than sugar
- 7 on the glycemic index
- may help prevent cavities
- great for baking
Common Use: Some diabetics use xylitol as a sugar substitute as blood sugar levels tend to stay at a more constant level with xylitol than with regular sugar because it is absorbed more slowly by the body.
Many oral care products contain xylitol since mouth bacteria use xylitol as a source of energy and thus may prevent tooth decay. One simple DIY recipe is a solution of water and xylitol in a spray bottle with a couple of drops of peppermint added.
Safety: if you take large amounts of xylitol, such as 30 to 40 grams, you may experience diarrhea or gas. Increasing your intake gradually may help minimize these effects.
Please note: if you are a dog owner, be aware that xylitol can be toxic to dogs, even in small amounts!

Squeeze squeeze mind at ease
It's great, easy to simply replace straight across and it doesn't have a weird taste and the kids can't tell the difference.
xylitol vs erythritol
I ordered both xylitol and erythritol. After some investigation, I learned that xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs. I have elected to not open the xylitol and to gift it to a friend that does not have a dog so there would be no danger of even an accidental poisoning. The erythritol is quite good and I am very please with the quality and packaging.
