Production: Nettle is a common botanical native to Africa and western Asia. Over time it has become naturalized across the globe and it can now be found growing wild in many parts of the world. It grows in temperate climates, in shady regions with moist soil.
Qualities: Nettle leaf, also known as stinging nettle, ortiga, or brennessel, has stinging hairs that protect the plant. When touched, the hairs cause irritation and welts, which tend not to last long and rarely cause serious harm. Once picked, the stinging hairs lose their potency within minutes. The harvested leaves have been used in traditional medicine for centuries.
Nettle leaves are rich in minerals and consumed for their diuretic and soothing effects on their urinary tract. Nettle is also used for joint ailments and as an astringent, a detoxifier, and for its high levels of vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, silicon, potassium chloride, chlorophyll, protein, and dietary fiber.
Common Use: Nettle leaf powder has a refreshing, slightly bitter taste, and can be taken in capsules or added to soups, smoothies, or juices. For an herbal tea infusion, we recommend using cut nettle leaves.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
