Botanical Name: Withania somnifera
Origin: India
Production: Our Ashwagandha powder is made from the roots only. Belonging to the tomato family, Ashwagandha is a plump shrub with oval leaves and yellow flowers, bearing small red fruits. The herb is native to the dry regions of India, northern Africa, and the Middle East, and today is also grown in more mild climates, including the United States.
Qualities: Ashwagandha (aka Indian Ginseng) is one of the most well-known and widely used Ayurvedic herbs as it contains many useful medicinal chemicals, including withanolides (steroidal lactones), alkaloids, choline, fatty acids, amino acids, and a variety of sugars. While the leaves and fruit have valuable therapeutic properties, the root of the Ashwagandha plant is the part most commonly used in Western herbal remedies.
The list of health promoting qualities attributed to Ashwagandha root range from protecting the immune system, anti-inflammatory benefits, helping with concentration and combating the effects of stress, to improving sleep and reducing anxiety and depression. Overall, Ashwagandha is most well-known for its restorative and vitality promoting benefits, supporting an energetic and rejuvenating sense of wellbeing.
Common Use: Ashwagandha is typically prepared as a tea (c/s form), liquid herbal extract, in herbal capsules, added to food, or directly consumed.
Storage: Store in cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
Safety: Not for use in pregnancy except under the supervision of a qualified healthcare practitioner.
