Botanical Name: Avena sativa
Production: Oat is an edible grass that has been cultivated since prehistoric times for its edible, ripened seed (oat groat). Oat tops are obtained by drying and threshing the whole plant, including the dried oat tops.
Oat tops are best harvested when the seed is mature or "milky" during which the oat kernel releases a white, milky sap when squeezed. This stage occurs after the oat begins flowering and before the seed hardens to become what is then called an oat groat.
Qualities: Oatstraw contains protein (gluten) saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, steroidal compounds, vitamins B1, B2, D, E, carotene, starch, fat, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron, and trace elements like silicon and potassium. It is highly valued for its support of the nervous system and prescribed to restore balance and a sense of calm in depressed, exhausted, and anxious individuals, or those who are suffering from insomnia.
