Botanical Name: Pimenta dioica/officinalis
Origin: Mexico
Production: Allspice (aka Jamaican pepper, clove pepper, pimenta, or new spice) is the dried fruit of the Pimenta dioica plant. The fruits are picked when green and unripe and are traditionally dried in the sun. Once they are dried, they are brown and look similar to large, smooth peppercorns.
Qualities: Indigenous to the West Indies and Latin America, allspice was given its name based on its complex flavor combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, cloves, and juniper berries. Allspice extracts are believed to have antioxidant, antiseptic and carminative properties, and to be useful in fighting yeast and fungal infections.
Common Use: Allspice has a wide variety of uses from culinary to medicinal to applications in the perfume industry. It is commonly used as a baking spice, such as in pumpkin pie spice, and is also enjoyed in hot drinks such as hot apple cider and chai tea. It is also a key ingredient in Caribbean cuisine and in North African stews and marinades.

Like most berry type spices, allspice is better ground fresh, but also, like cloves, even when ground it still retains a decent flavor level when ground. Having the powder is convenient, and if used up and not stored long, will do the job just fine without having to grind the whole berries.

I found this allspice powder to be a little less potent than what I expected. But, having said that, I am not an allspice expert, and maybe allspice is like nutmeg, where it is best ground at the time you use it. So, I don't want the review to be negative, but I think for me, buying whole seeds may be a better bet for allspice. That is unless this allspice really is not up to grade, which I can't say for sure. It still is organic and has some decent flavor. BTW, every spice I purchased from EO was very good.
